Date: May 16th 2012 4:27p.m. Contributed by: leemack Some say the Chinese invented golf via an ancient game called chuiwan. That’s rubbish, of course. The Scots invented the modern game of golf, and Asia’s first modern course opened in Kobe, Japan, only in 1905. But over the last two decades, there’s no denying Asia has exploded with stunning golf courses. Asia's Best Thailand by itself is widely reputed to be the world’s number three golfing destination after Spain and the U.S. It boasts over 250 courses scattered throughout the country, and many of them are eminently affordable. Date: May 16th 2012 2:23p.m. Contributed by: cityweekend By now, you've probably heard of the "100-Day Campaign," announced yesterday across China by the PSB. Essentially, it's a quest to root out "illegal foreigners," meaning people who have either overstayed their visas or are working without a work permit. Expats are talking about it in hushed whispers, like a city-wide game of telephone full of urban visa legends. Before you panic and run for the border, here's an overview of what we know. This campaign is scheduled to run from now until August, although it is likely that it will happen…

What exactly does summer mean in a city like ours? Well, short skirts. Also, perverts. The problem is real – as the Chinese police and just about any short-skirt-wearing young lady can tell you. • The Lighter Side of China – Holiday Traditions

    15 May 2012 | 9:00 pm
After celebrating Mother’s Day with my wife and kids this past week, I began thinking about how holidays in general are celebrated in China. In my opinion, Chinese festivals can pretty much be summed up as follows: family, food and a dose of spiritual context. Every Chinese New Year, I excuse myself from the dining table, assume my position on my mother-in-law’s couch and write a note to my family and friends. It is a time for nostalgia, for looking back on the past year and ahead to the next, and to send my best wishes to all the people that I regret not spending enough…

  • Walking In A Thousand Year Old Forest

    Ray
    29 Apr 2012 | 4:14 pm
It has been raining everyday since we arrived, but surprisingly today the sun came out and it didn’t rain. We decided to make the most of the fine weather and go walking in the nearby Hatfield Forest. The forest is over a 1000 years old and use to be a royal hunting ground for the kings of England. In those times it was only for royalty and the common people were banned from entering the forest. The weather could not have been better and the English countryside is a great place to explore in the summer. So we spent the afternoon walking around and taking in the sights and sounds of…
  • Billionaire Belgravia Town Houses

    28 Apr 2012 | 4:13 pm
We went back to Knightsbridge for more shopping, as Canthy told me one day is never enough. She loves the houses in this area as it reminds her of her favourite TV shows, Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs. The shows portray what life was like in England for the upper classes over a hundred years ago. In those times, these six story houses would be looked after by a host of servants. As these white stucco houses in this part of Belgravia are some of the most expensive in London. Nowadays not many people can afford a whole house, so many have been converted into separate apartments often…
  • Where The King And Queen Buy Their Food

We spent the day shopping in London and around Kensington and Knightsbridge. It’s the most expensive part of the London where you find all the high-end fashion brands and department stores like Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Even the supermarkets here are posh like this branch of Waitrose. Which has the royal coat of arms for the Queen and Prince Philip at its entrance. This royal warrant signifies that the store supplies its products to the Queen so is a mark of quality and prestige. Although you would never see the Queen doing her own shopping in Waitrose, but if it’s good enough for her…
  • New Nifty Fifty Pound Note

    27 Apr 2012 | 1:21 am
Canthy always plans to do a lot of shopping in the UK, as the prices are so much cheaper than in China. Also we can get part of the VAT (20%) back as we are non-residence, which makes it even better value. We changed up money before we came as the exchange rate of Chinese RMB to British pounds was better and they gave us new fifty pound notes. The new note (top) doesn’t look too different from the old version (bottom) except the design is a bit smarter. It is still a very conservative and traditional design approach, but it fits in with the existing design of the other denomination…
  • Walkabout In The Fields

    Ray
    25 Apr 2012 | 4:05 pm
It rained again on and off all day but we didn’t want it to spoil our day. So when the rain stopped we would go outside to play and get some fresh air. I took Tanya on a walkabout in the fields across from my parents’ house. The farmers grow a number of different crops including wheat and rapeseed, which has this bright yellow flower. It gives the countryside a lovely colour as it blankets the fields in gold. Tanya looked quite lost, as it’s the first time she’s been surrounded by so much nature and some of the plants were bigger than her.
