To most Beijing residents, buying plants has become a Chinese New Year tradition. On the first floor, as you walk in there are potted plants on the left, and cut flowers available on the right. There are over 50 booths altogether, and most of them sell a variety of flowers. Some focus on one or two popular breeds, like the moth orchid (¥30-50 per flower) or kaffir lily. For wishing happiness, plants with pretty flowers are most popular.

Whether you wanted the relationship to end or not, when it does so, you are left with a gaping void. Breaking up with someone is like losing a limb; it hurts like hell, takes ages to heal, and a replacement takes a lot of getting used to. Relationships end in various manners and styles. Some fizzle out and linger while both sides wait for the other to confirm the inevitable. Others end…

It’s a multi-story complex with a high-end wine cellar, restaurant serving both Chinese and French food, and a cigar bar. It’s also owned by Hebei investors, designed locally in a Renaissance/Gothic European style, and located in the midst of bunch of seedy looking KTVs and “man spas” decked out in neon. Shockingly, the place looks really nice inside, and actually legitimately European. The waitstaff has to dress in 18th century-style European clothes, which amuses me…

The first troupe to perform ballet master Balanchine’s works in Europe in the 1950s, the Hamburg Ballet quickly became known for its nuanced and innovative performances. As art director, noted dancer and choreographer John Neumeier has brought a modern flavor to the ballet’s rigorously classical style. This mixing of modern dance and classical ballet has given it a distinct and unique performance style that has impressed audiences around the globe.

The narrow street's of Beijing's hutong are not really suitable for cars, making pedicabs and bicycles the best and most environmentally sound way of seeing them. Beijing hutong pedicab tours usually take in the Drum Tower, Prince Gong's Mansion, a Siheyuan (traditional Chinese courtyard house), Lama Temple and Pipe Tobacco Alley close to the Bell Tower. There is usually a stop for a drink at a hutong cafe or teahouse. A number of large Chinese tour companies offer pedicab half day and full day tours. © Beijing-Visitor.com…

If Twilo existed in a cartoon, it would probably be hidden inside a seemingly innocuous tree trunk. Accessed via struggling Italian restaurant Abella, Doron falls short of the impressive standards set by other Japanese bars. The shabby, threadbare carpeted stairs up to the bar inspire little confidence, and the decor does nothing to alleviate those doubts. It’s only the first week of the New Year but I don’t think they will be a more controversial movie than the Iron Lady that opened today in cinemas. Its the story of Margaret Thatcher, one of the most loved or hated of Britain’s Prime Ministers depending on your politics. Movie critics are also divided on the quality of the film, which deals with Thatcher’s dementia in later years. Many people think its wrong to make this film while she is still alive. Interesting the film has gone down well in the south of England but not so well in the north of England. Thatcher divided the country…

The weather has been very mild, though I would of preferred it to have snowed as it makes it feel more like Christmas. However, today we had 100 mile an hour winds, which caused havoc across Britain bringing down power lines and falling on cars. One of the big trees in my parent’s garden was blown down and just missed smashing into their chicken shed. My dad said it was lucky as the tree is almost 150 feet tall. He said it will take some time to clean up, but we will chop it up for firework for their house, which will last for months.

One of the best things of staying at my parents is that they have a huge garden. It’s got fish ponds and swings and lots of space for Tanya to run around and play in. Canthy loved it too, but said it would be much better in the summer when the weather is warmer. In China most people in big cities live in high-rise apartment blocks without gardens. It’s one of the things I really miss in Beijing. Canthy always says we can have one if we bought a house and moved outside Beijing. But I don’t think we are quite ready to move to the suburbs and commute two to three hours a day.
